  • Description is exactly "Dr. Hicks located in Florence in June of 1933. He was one of four African-American MDs in Florence between 1890 and 1940.

    In June of 1953 Hicks became the first African-American physician elected to the Lauderdale County Medical Society (by a unanimous vote), and the first in state history. He was also the first black admitted to the Alabama Medical Association, in January of 1954.

    Dr. Hicks is the namesake of Dr. Hicks Boulevard in Florence."
