Jeff Bedford was an enslaved man who was once owned by Matilda Bedford, who was indicted for negligence towards her slaves." According to Florence historian Lee Freeman, "Old Uncle Jeff Bedford" (ca. 1809-1894), a mulatto man who died Tuesday, June 25, 1894 at about 85 years of age. Jeff's wife was a mulatto woman named Hannah (ca. 1817-aft. 1880) and in 1880 they lived on Market St. (now Wood Avenue) in Florence with their grandsons, 11 year-old Aries and 4 year-old Chalmers Wilson."
