  • Description is exactly "Three newspaper articles dealing with the April, 1906 assassination of African-American Florence resident Lewis Waits (ca. 1858-1908) as he stood in the doorway of his Handy Hill home. A coroner's inquest held by JD Weeden determined that Waits was killed by a shotgun blast with some twenty-seven buckshot entering in his chest and back. The *Florence Times* called the murder "one of the worst ever committed in this county. It was deliberate, premeditated assassination" and urged that "no effort should be spared to hunt down the murderer." As far as known Waits' unknown assassin was never caught."
