Title
A name given to the resource
Peter, Harry, and Cate: Escaped from the Forks of Cypress Plantation
Subject
The topic of the resource
Enslaved people
Description
An account of the resource
James Jackson, owner of the Forks of Cypress plantation in Florence, offered a $150 reward for the return of three enslaved people: Peter, described as a "very stout, likely fellow, not very black, rather high cheek bones, fleshy in the face, speaks loud, supposed to be about 25 years old; his clothing were white cotton shirt and pantaloons." Harry: "is of uncommon size, well made, very black, pert and active, from 25 to 30 years of age, had on when he left home, a white cotton shirt and pantaloons." Cate "is a little under the common size, very black, likely and well made, speaks lively, took with her one or two striped cotton coats, about 24 or 25 years of age. They stole a sorrel horse, 14 1/2 hands high."
Jackson suspected that the three might go to North Carolina, from where they were "brought." He further speculated that they might attempt to go to Ohio, Indiana, or Illinois, and if they did, they might be helped by a man named Willis, described by Jackson as a "notorious scoundrel," late enslaved by Peter R. Booker of Columbia, TN. Willis was depicted as "about 6 feet high, very likely, yellow complexion, and stout made."

Title

Eight Abolitionist Societies in Alabama in the 1830s.
Description
An account of the resource
1. Pages 87 and 92 of "Anti-Slavery Sentiment in the South; With Unpublished Letters from John Stuart Mill and Mrs. Stowe" by Stephen D. Weeks, Ph.D.
Concerning the existence of abolitionist societies in Northwest Alabama, Weeks writes:
"There were in 1832 seven [sic] Colonization Societies in Alabama: The State Society, Courtland, LaGrange, Tuscumbia, Florence, Madison County, Athens, and Lincoln."
Note: In February of 1832 the Perry County Colonization Society was established in Marion, in Perry County, Alabama.
2. The title page, copyright page and Page 10 of Alabama historian Walter L. Fleming's 1905 book Civil War and Reconstruction in Alabama, which contains a footnote on p. 10, referencing the 1898 article by Weeks and stating:
"In 1832 there were eight emancipation societies in north Alabama: The State Society, Courtland, Lagrange, Tuscumbia, Florence, Madison County, Athens, and Lincoln. Publications, Southern History Association, Vol. II, pp. 92-93."
3. A Wednesday, February 28, 1934 Roanoke (AL) Leader article stating that one hundred years ago there were eight abolitionist societies in North Alabama: Athens; Courtland; Florence; LaGrange; Lincoln; Madison County; Tuscumbia; and the State Society.
The Leader was probably getting its information from Fleming's 1905 book. A lot more research needs to be done on this subject. For now, these are the only three sources I know of for the existence of abolitionist societies anywhere in Northwest Alabama other than Madison County, which did have one, the Madison County Colonization Society, founded in January of 1830.
