A Wednesday, June 18, 1873 *Florence Times-Journal* report of an altercation between black residents Nat Vaughan and Jim Buckingham which resulted in both men suffering "the usual penalty," meaning they were fined and released.
Jim Buckingham may be the James "Jim" Buckingham (1846-1915) who was a farmer and former cook in Co K, 7th AL Inf, CSA and who attended some United Confederate Veterans reunions after the war. This Jim Buckingham married Susan Foster in 1866 and they had a total of 7 children, 3 still living by 1900.

A Thursday, January 7, 1954 *Florence Times* report of the arrest of 35 year-old William "Willie" Lee Wilson of Darby Avenue, Florence, on two warrants charging "malicious injury to property" sworn out by black resident John Hampton, owner of a small cafe in the 100 block of West Alabama Street, where he also lives. Hampton and some others allegedly saw Wilson standing next to Hampton's car with a knife and when they approached, the men noticed Hampton's tires had been slashed. Wilson's knife appeared to have black rubber stains on it and he and possibly an accomplice or accomplices is suspected in a rash of recent tire slashings "within a few blocks of Court Street."

Mr. Coleman reportedly found Horn in bed with Mrs. Coleman (a teacher at the Veterans' Training School in Sheffield which Horn attended) at their Portlock Avenue, Florence home. A fight broke out with the result that Horn suffered a fractured skull and multiple fractures of the jaw and face, dying of his injuries at Eliza Coffee Hospital. Both Colemans were arrested and a warrant for murder was sworn out by Horn's widow Emma Horn. The case was turned over to county officials, who at the time of publication, were still investigating the alleged murder.
