Store in Florence, being awakened by noises in his garage, had apprehended a young unnamed African-American boy attempting to steal his automobile, holding the youth at gunpoint until police arrived. The boy confessed to being a member of a local gang of Black youths who had banded together to steal cars. The TVA also converted nitrate producing facilities built during World War I and World War II to produce synthetic fertilizer. Through the test demonstration program, TVA distributed fertilizer to local farmers, who demonstrated the benefits of the fertilizer to their neighbors.
