Ku Klux: The Birth of the Klan During Reconstruction
Subject
The topic of the resource
Resources
Description
An account of the resource
The first in-depth, critical study of the Klan's origins since the 1970s, Ku Klux traces the Klan's origins to a group of six bored ex-Confederates in Pulaski, Tennessee in May or June of 1866, who wished to establish a secret society similar to the Freemasons or Odd Fellows.
The book corrects previous widespread misconceptions and presuppositions regarding the early history of the Klan, for example the belief that it was highly structured from its inception. On the contrary, Parsons, professor of history and a published author at Kent State University, based upon a close and detailed examination of the original (yet meager) sources, argues instead that the original Klan was a local organization, loosely structured along the lines of a fraternal order, and which drew from the lore and vocabulary of such secret societies, as well as popular mid-19th century dramatic and minstrel traditions and which did not begin to proliferate and spread to other counties and states until late 1867 or early 1868. Nor, from the best available evidence, did the incipient Pulaski Klan group exhibit violent tendencies; while certainly racist, it was nevertheless only as the Klan began to be noticed and proliferate throughout Tennessee in 1867-1868 that it realized that it could intimidate freedmen and their while Republican allies via acts of violence. In particular, Parsons argues that it was only as reports of these incipient Tennessee Klan groups' mysterious yet menacing activities began circulating in Northern newspapers that whites across the South then began founding their own Klan groups.

An account of the resource
A great book by native Alabamian Prof. Richard Bailey, who has lectured several times in Florence, on black officeholders such as Florence native and Republican Congressman (1873-1875) James T. Rapier (1838-1883) during Reconstruction in Alabama.
This book provides an in-depth look at the struggles of blacks in Alabama to become a part of a political system that up until then had denied them that right. It sheds particular light upon the political gains made by the freedmen in Alabama from the end of the Civil War and the beginning of Reconstruction up through the late 1870s and early 1880s. It tracks the political advances made by black Republican officeholders against a majority white Democratic establishment keen on courting blacks away from the GOP in order to regain and bolster it own power. However the book also examines black education in Alabama during Reconstruction, as black educational opportunities arose alongside political opportunities, and chronicles the founding and early history of several notable black colleges and universities in Alabama.
The book is heavily foot-noted, indexed, and contains a large bibliography and many black and white photos. The appendices contain, among other things, an alphabetical list of black officeholders in Alabama 1867-1884.

Loyalty and Loss: Alabama's Unionists in the Civil War and Reconstruction

An account of the resource
A ground-braking and fascinating study on pro-Union sentiment in Alabama before, during and after the Civil War. Storey's book goes a long way towards disproving the myth that all Alabamians were eager secessionists and die-hard Confederates. On the contrary, there were pockets of Unionist senmtiment--even in South Alabama--before and during the war and Storey's work examines that Unionism, including many references to the Tennessee Valley of NW Alabama and specifically Franklin (Colbert didn't exist until 1867) and Lauderdale Counties. Storey mentions many Unionists, black and white, from both of these counties in the text.
Her book points out that while some committed Unionists in Alabama were abolitionists, at the same time others were also slave-owners, and the book details the relationships these white Unionists had with their Unionist slaves. A few of these slave-owners were willing to sacrifice slavery if it meant preserving the Union and in some cases they were assisted by their slaves in spying for the Union Army. Indeed, the book contains much information on how Unionist African-Americans, slave and free, navigated the war. Drawing heavily on petitions from the Southern Claims Commission (a court set up by the US government in 1871 to reimburse Southerners loyal to the Union during the war for livestock, goods and material confiscated by the US Army during the war), the book describes the deprivation, the fear and mistrust and in some cases outright persecution, these Unionists, black and white faced during the war.
The book is sourced, foot-noted and indexed, and contains a bibliography as well as several useful charts and maps.
