A June 5, 1861 Florence Gazette article reporting that "a cripled [sic] free colored man, who is known by the name of Ab [Abe?]," "begged and plead to be allowed to go with" Capt. J. Butler Houston's Co. D, 9th AL Inf., CS "last Monday." On being told he couldn't go, "Ab" "gave all the money that he had with him," to one of the men in the company.

Attempts to identify Ab have been unsuccessful.
