Dr. Hicks located in Florence in June of 1933. He was one of six African-American MDs in Florence between 1890 and 1940.

In June of 1953 Hicks became the first African-American physician elected to the Lauderdale County Medical Society (by a unanimous vote), and the first in state history. He was also the first black admitted to the Alabama Medical Association, in January of 1954.

Dr. Hicks is the namesake of Dr. Hicks Boulevard in Florence.
1. "Dr. Hicks Admitted Into Medical Society." A Thursday, June 11, 1953 Florence Herald report that Dr. Leonard Jerry Hicks had recently been elected to membership in the Lauderdale County Medical Association.
2. "Coffee Hospital is Approved by Commission." A Thursday, March 10, 1955 Florence Herald article reporting that the new Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital had been accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals, and that Dr. L. J. Hicks, MD was on the staff of physicians.
3. A July 23, 1961 Florence Times photo of Dr. Leonard Jerry Hicks being presented with a letter of commendation from Gov. John Patterson, a Certificate of Appreciation from Pres. John F. Kennedy and the National Director of Selective Service, and a silver lapel button by WA Parrish, field representative of the Alabama Selective Service System for completing fifteen years of service to Lauderdale County Local Board No. 39.
