An April 19, 1956 Florence Herald editorial defending segregation but decrying as "a deplorable incident" a recent attack by "hoodlum whites from another community" on African-American singing star Nat King Cole, who was in Birmingham, playing a concert to an all-white audience.

Founded in 1886 as the Florence Wave, by 1958 Marcy B. Darnall was editor of the Herald, Harold S. May was managing editor, Oscar D. Lewis was advertising manager, and Albert L. Martin was production manager.
