Description

This report by census enumerator Peter R. Garner sets out the census statistics for whites, slaves and free blacks in Lauderdale County for the census year of 1860. Garner reported

1831 male slaves

1906 female slaves

13 free male people of color

22 female free people of color

for a total black population of 3737 (the total should be 3772). It's possible these are the figures from one enumerator's district, Garner's, and not the whole county, as the "Classified Population of the States and Territories by Counties on the First Day of June, 1860," State of Alabama, p. 7 gave a total of 6,737 slaves and 44 free people of color in Lauderdale County, with a total white population of 10, 639.

For Lauderdale County Garner also reported 1 fugitive slave; 1 albino slave and 1 slave with Native American ancestry; 1 deaf and dumb slave; 1 slave who was nearly blind; 1 slave who was insane; and four slaves who were "idiots" or mentally disabled. Further Garner reported 43 male black deaths in the past year and 49 female black deaths in the past year.
