<a href="/items/browse?advanced%5B0%5D%5Belement_id%5D=41&advanced%5B0%5D%5Btype%5D=is+exactly&advanced%5B0%5D%5Bterms%5D=+Florence+Herald+and+Florence+Times+reports+that+on+Monday+night%2C+August+11%2C+1890+Former+city+marshal++William+Edward+%22Ed%22+Brown+%281847-1894%29+caught+two+black+youths%2C+John+Patton+and+Buck+Williams%2C+attempting+to+steal+his+chickens%2C+%22locked+them+up%2C%22+sent+for+a+horse+whip%2C+then+proceeded+to+%22administer+the+%27rod+of+correction%27+till+they+were+completely+worn+out.%22+The+youths+also+confessed+to+other+robberies."> Florence Herald and Florence Times reports that on Monday night, August 11, 1890 Former city marshal William Edward "Ed" Brown (1847-1894) caught two black youths, John Patton and Buck Williams, attempting to steal his chickens, "locked them up," sent for a horse whip, then proceeded to "administer the 'rod of correction' till they were completely worn out." The youths also confessed to other robberies.</a>
