Bethel, a "two-teacher type" school near Smithsonia, in the Bend of the River in West Lauderdale, was founded in May of 1917 and according to the Florence Times would cost an estimated $2,000, with one-third of the funds raised by the local Black community, one third by the state, and one third by the Rosenwald Fund. However the Fisk University Rosenwald Database says that Bethel was built at a total cost of $950.

    In the 1950s Bethel was one of several locations at which the county held x-ray clinics, at which Alabama residents between the ages of 13 and 50 had to be x-rayed to trst of tuberculosis. "
