  • Description is exactly "Three Florence Herald articles from February and March, 1890 reporting on the escape, capture and extradition back to Florence from Memphis of African-American Matt Jenkins, charged with grand larceny.

Jenkins refused to return to Florence from Memphis with Lauderdale County Sheriff George W. Porter without requisition papers, which Jenkins assured Porter would be too expensive and not worth the effort based upon what he stole (some clothes and a watch). The Sheriff promptly received the necessary papers from Tennessee Gov. Robert Taylor (1887-1891), Jenkins was extradited back to Florence, tried, convicted, and sentenced to one year's hard labor in the coal mines in March of 1890."
