Description

This is an article detailing an altercation between Florence merchant John Simpson's overseer, John Murphy, and an enslaved man named Dick. Apparently, Murphy had chastised the wife of Dick, who responded by "using the most insolent and abusive language" towards Murphy. Murphy struck Dick with the butt of a whip, after which Dick stabbed Murphy in the face and chest before being subdued by other enslaved people. Murphy later died of his wounds.
