A Wednesday, March 20, 1878 Florence Gazette report of cases in the previous week's Circuit Court, including the case of African-American George Patton, who plead guilty to attempted rape and was sentenced to seven years in the penitentiary; also the entry for docket no 2740 from Lauderdale County Circuit Court Minute Docket, 1875-1878, p. 412, setting forth Patton's conviction.

Patton confessed himself guilty of "assault with intent to ravish" and threw himself "upon the mercy of the court," which sentenced him to seven years in the state prison.
