1. A Thursday, June 14, 1943 Florence Herald Notice from the column "Our Boys in the Service" that Florence native Cpl. Clarence J. Simpson was recently a member of the first Negro graduating class of Scott Field, Illinois' radio operators and mechanics course, parent radio school of the US Army Air Force 's Technical Training Command. The Herald noted that Cpl. Simpson might be sent to a more advanced school for training as part of a bombing team.

2. A Thursday, June 18, 1943 Florence Herald Notice from the column "Our Boys in the Service" that Route 1, Killen resident Sgt. John T. Bulls was recently a member of the first Negro graduating class of Scott Field, Illinois' radio operators and mechanics course, parent radio school of the US Army Air Force 's Technical Training Command. The Herald noted that Sgt. Bulls might be sent to a more advanced radio school, a gunnery school, or an operational training school, for training as part of a bombing team.
