A Friday, May 5, 1944 Florence Herald report that Florence resident Mr. McKinley Brooks, a custodian at the Wilson Dam powerhouse had just received the Purple Heart awarded posthumously to his son, Steward Mate 1/c, US Navy William Brooks, who died when his ship the USS Wasp was destroyed by fire on September 16, 1943.
