A Saturday, September 18, 1880 Florence (AL) Gazette article reporting the formation of a Hancock, English and Wheeler Club at Cheatham's Ferry, in the "Bend of the River" area of West Lauderdale County, which "several colored men joined."

Hancock and English Clubs endorsed Winfield Scott Hancock and William H. English for President and Vice President on the Democratic ticket in the 1880 election. Gen. Joseph Wheeler of Lawrence County, Alabama ran for Congress in the 1880 election on the Democratic ticket.
