This is a letter to the editor from George Washington Seawright. Florence historian Lee Freeman notes: "In this letter Sewaright is calling attention that certain black teachers, Rev. Henry Hopkins and Prof. WR Wood, of the Colored Free School cannot walk down the streets of Florence without being insulted by "some low down scamp hollowing at them" and calling them "Democrat Negroes." The teachers in question are "honorable Christian gentlemen" and politics shouldn't be brought into the schools."
