According to Florence historian Lee Freeman, Sheffey was " district manager of the Union Mutual Aid Association of Mobile, which had offices at 120 1/2 North Court. The Union Mutual Aid Association was a black benevolent society founded in Mobile, Alabama in 1898 and had over 45,000 members by 1906. "
