  • Description is exactly "A Friday, November 5, 1948 Florence Times and Friday, November 12, 1948 Florence Herald report of the Thursday night, November 4th shooting of 32 year-old African-American Florence resident Simon Bennett by cab driver AH Tate, after a round of gambling at Bennett's residence on Wildwood Avenue, Florence.

    The shooting, allegedly witnessed by Tate's wife, occurred in a neighbor's yard, after Tate returned to Bennett's home to retrieve his missing wallet, believing Bennett had stolen it. Bennett claimed Tate drew first while Tate and his wife alleged that Bennett drew first, the result being that Bennett was shot in the shoulder. He was taken to ECM hospital where he was listed as in "fair" condition the following Monday.

    Tate turned himself in Thursday night and was arrested on charges of assault with intent to murder and assault with a weapon, both warrants sworn out by members of Bennett's family.."
