  • Description is exactly "A Friday, October 16, 1908 newspaper report of the arrest of John Clemons [sic], a black resident of Oakland, in the bend of the river, for selling liquor without a license. Clemons was arrested in an alley between Court and Pine Streets within a block of the court house and city hall, after concluding an illegal sale of liquor to several unnamed black men in back of the old blacksmith shop behind the Surprise Store (later Rogers Dept. Store) on Court Street. Clemons was fined $100 and sentenced to work 30 days on the streets."
