Clarence Armstead of Lauderdale County, and a truck driver in the artillery's Headquarters and Service Battery at Kitzingen, Germany, had recently participated in field exercises with the 82nd Artillery in Germany.

    Lawrence Armstead (1934-1982) was one of seven children--five sons and two daughters--of Clarence (1900-1973) and Mary Louis Chandler (1904-1994) Armstead of Smithsonia, in Lauderdale County. In 1940 the Armsteads, farmers, lived on Cheatham's Ferry Road.

    Lawrence's brother, Joseph (1928-1984) served in the US Navy."
