  • Description is exactly "A collection of Circuit, Justice and Mayor's Court notices from the Florence Herald Newspaper for the years 1889-1910.

These notices list who was in court that week, what they were charged with and what the sentence was. In the late 19th century African-Americans were typically denoted as "colored" or (c) however the Herald didn't always do this, thus figuring out exactly who was African-American is tricky sometimes. I've tried to include only those that I'm pretty certain contain the names of local African-Americans.

The Florence Wave was founded in 1885 by Dr. WJ Kernachan of Florence but was purchased by the American Publishing Company and became the Florence Herald in July of 1889; until 1891 the paper was published semi-weekly. It continued publishing as a weekly until 1976. It eventually merged with the Picture Page to become the Florence Herald=Picture and published a few more years, into the 1980s.

Efforts have been made to collect as many of these items as we come across however we have undoubtedly missed some. We'll add them periodically as we find more of them.
