- Description is exactly "A collection of Circuit, Justice and Mayor's Court notices from the Lauderdale Journal and Florence Standard-Journal Newspapers for the years 1897-1898.
These notices list who was in court that week, what they were charged with and what the sentence was. In the late 19th century African-Americans were typically denoted as "colored" or (c) however these two papers didn't often do this, thus figuring out exactly who was African-American is tricky sometimes. I've tried to include only those that I'm pretty certain contain the names of local African-Americans.
These notices were culled from 35 year-old microfilm thus the image quality isn't nearly as good as we could wish.
The Lauderdale Journal was founded by Roland C McFarland and Mortimer Chitwood in 1896. In January of 1897 the Journal merged with the Sheffield Standard to become the Florence Standard-Journal. In 1898 the partnership was dissolved and RC McFarland and the Standard Printing Company became the publisher. This weekly paper ceased publication in October of 1898."
