  • Description is exactly "This is a notice of a sale published by Florence resident and future AL gov. (1865-1867) Robert M. Patton for the sale at the court house in Florence at public auction on December 21, 1859, of the late Mary Saffarrans' house and lot on Seminary Street (currently occupied by Mayor George Sneed [1837-1838; 1853-1860], the Saffarrans' neighbor in 1850), including an unnamed Negro girl.

Note: Mary Heralson/Haralson Saffarans (1809-1856) was the widow of Virginia native Peter Saffarrans (1802-1840). Peter and Mary had several children, one of whom, Mary E., married Scottish native and Florence tailor Alexander Hannah in 1856.

In 1840 Peter Saffarrans owned two slaves, one male under 10 years old, and one male bet. 24 and 26 years old. I haven't located any other records of the Saffarrans' slaves yet."
