Florence historian Lee Freeman notes: " In 1872 Virginia native Hilton Key (ca. 1832-1895) received payment from the county for repairing the windows of the county jail. In 1886 Key opened a blacksmith shop at his old stand on Tombeckbee (Tombigbee) near Court, implying that he had a business at that location earlier. Hilton’s wife’s name was Margaret (1846-). By 1870 Hilton and Margaret had one daughter, Mollie, born in 1869; how many children the Keys had isn’t known though Hilton became the father-in-law of Mulatto livery stable owner of Jesse Patton when Jesse married Hilton’s daughter Katie. In 1870 Hilton had a 20 year-old man, George Key (possibly his brother) working as a blacksmith at his shop. Ten year-old Jarrett Buck was a servant. One Robert Key (d. 1895) was a shoemaker who had a shop in 1879. In September of 1879 his underage daughter created a sensation when she, against her father’s wishes, eloped with a man named Cardon. In September of 1879 Key and family left Florence for Coahoma, MS; he died Wednesday, October 29, in Mississippi. Robert May have been a brother of Hilton Key.""
