- Description is exactly "This is an ad for W.H. Dismuke's grocery store. Florence historian Lee Freeman notes: "William H. Dismukes (ca. 1875-aft. 1901) was a former “trusted employee of the [Florence] Wagon Co.,” originally from Corinth, Mississippi, who in September of 1897 opened a grocery store in the Perry Block of East Mobile Street, next door to cobbler George W. Seawright’s shoe shop. In December of 1894 William married Miss Berta J. Leigh, “a popular colored belle,” at St. Paul AME Church with Rev. A A Godwin officiating. Berta was a daughter of Minerva J. Leigh (ca. 1841-aft. 1900) who was widowed by 1900. By 1900 William and Berta had two daughters, Rosa E. (1896-) and Repta (1899-). In 1901 Berta contracted smallpox, and it is not known at this time whether or not she recovered. I don’t know how long Dismukes was in business—the last reference to Dismukes’ store was in the 1900 business and professional directory.""
