Florence historian Lee Freeman notes the "First Congregational Church was founded on Pine St. next door to the county jail ca. 1876-1878 with assistance from the American Missionary Society of New York, which also founded the Carpenter High School, of which pastors of the church were the first principals of the school. By 1939 the Congregational Church had closed and the Methodist Community Church, now the Tennessee Valley Community Church, met on the site.""
