A Friday, December 10, 1948 Florence Herald report that the Black veterans of Florence-Lauderdale with the assistance of Post No. 11 of Florence, had established a temporary Negro American Legion post in Florence, awaiting official confirmation by the state and national Legion headquarters.

The officers were: William B. Garrett, commander; Willie M. Kimbrough, vice-commander; Lawrence G. Armstead, historian; Turner J. Alexander, chaplain; Samuel J. Bates, sergeant-at-arms.
